There are several kind of fence to choose from to suit all kind of gardens. All are sturdy and strong. Any new fence should last for many years in your garden, so the most important consideration is to choose one which you find most pleasing to look at. Here we will discuss some of the most common or popular choices.
Closeboard panels are a robust feather edge (see below) panel usually slotted into a concrete post atop a concrete gravel board. They are the toughest and smartest type of panel fence. They are ideal if you wish to grow climbing plants as cover. Any panel fence is typically suited to place a small trellis at the top too.
Lap panels are a cheaper option than closeboard and will look more familiar to most customers as the standard in fence panels. Again, they are usually slotted into concrete post though they are recommended if you prefer a panel fence with wooden posts.
A feather edge fence is a fully bespoke fence. Overlapping featheredge boards are fixed to wooden arris rails on top of a 6 inch wooden gravel board. Large wooden posts are used in contruction. The look is similar to closeboard, but the posts are not visible on the face side. Featheredge are ideal for a fully wooden look to your fence. However it is worth noting that it is highly recommended that you secure wooden posts with a concrete spur as this will greatly prolong the life of your fence.
Pales differ from feather edge in that they are not tapered and typically feature a small gap between each pale, usually either the width or breadth of one pale apart. They are ideal for small picket fences, though you may choose a tall version.
